Add Vintage Personal Style to Your Christmas Decor

It’s the most magical time of the year. I can’t wait to share with you how to add vintage personal style to your Christmas decor using favorite collections found throughout the year.

This week I am sharing some fabulous holiday decor links for you to see some of my amazing and inspiring blogging friends share their Christmas decor as well. Make sure you scroll down to the end to check out some new favorites!

My favorite part after the thrill of the hunt is actually USING my items in my everyday life. So when special holidays roll around, and these vintage items can take center stage, I love incorporating these antique finds into my holiday decor.

These are my favorite everyday collections that can really shine at the holidays and add to your Christmas decorating.

Milk Glass

Back in 1980, I received my first piece of milk glass from my grandmother. Ever since then, I have been amassing a collection of milk glass that we use everyday.

Around Christmas time, I love that even more of. my collection gets to see the light of day! My favorite are the milk glass vases. These can be used in so many creative ways.

Mine hold a growing collection of mercury glass tree toppers. You can also display special ornaments and categorize them by color, shape, or height.

Compotes and small planters are perfect for displaying small trees and ornaments. Even platters can be used as bases for a Christmas village or similar decor that needs a platform.

Milk glass is easily found at many antique and thrift shops, and is an economical collection to start with. I know you will love how it looks in your home at the holidays!

Toy Trucks

My little vintage toy truck collection started long before I became a grandmother. I love the rustic nature of these items, and they are so fun to use at Christmas time.

Of course, now, my grandsons are drawn to them each year. So I always place ones that their eye level that I don’t mind them touching and admiring.

Toy trucks can hold bottle brush trees, mini packages, and even Christmas figurines. Just make sure Rudolph stays out of their way so he doesn’t turn into roadkill!

Blankets and Quilts

Collecting vintage quilts is always a good idea, as they can be used in many ways to enhance your decor. Living in a colder climate, I also love bringing out all the wool plaid blankets that can be used in display, along with practical uses like snuggling on the couch.

Quilts can be used as table toppers, tree skirts, and hung up to show their colorful designs. Consider hanging one on the wall or multiples on a ladder to add festive colors to your room.

Simply draping vintage quilts and blankets on the back of the sofa will add another layer of color for your holiday decor. Or roll them up to be displayed in a large basket, adding color to your holiday space.

Antlers

I love antlers all through the year! Whether they are attached to an animal head, mounted on a wood plaque, or singled out to add texture to a bowl of items.

Antlers and wood bowls always look great together, but when you add a bit of greens and holiday sparkle, they really add something special to holiday decor filled with personal style.

They can be displayed in a masculine way, adding festive decor to a man cave. But antlers look equally as interesting when they are accompanied by pretty things to create a ying and yang of holiday decor.

Wood Sock Stretchers

My large collection of wood and metal sock stretchers is getting a bit out of hand. And although these are items that were once used in everyday life, they make their appearance at my house only around the holidays.

But since they are the perfect “stocking”shape, they are a ‘shoe in’ (hahaha) for holiday decorating with lots of ribbon. Hang them en masse for the biggest WOW factor. And simply adding one or two in just the right place, makes anything look festive.

They can be adorned with ribbons and greenery, or left plain to enjoy their patina. However you choose to use them, they will surely make the holidays more festive at your house.

Baskets

Antique and vintage baskets are another collection that I have a slight problem with. But nothing adds needed texture to a holiday display like a woven basket with a great patina.

They can be used to house just about anything. From vintage toys, to Christmas trees, pinecones, quilts, ornaments, or even turned upside down as a pedestal, baskets are the workhorse of any decor display.

Since baskets come in so many sizes, and have handles, you can tie loads of ribbons on them to add festive color to your displays. I also use my wicker demijohn collection to add texture to displays. And don’t forget to have them come out for use on the holiday tablescape.

Wood or Metal Buckets

The patina of wood and metal buckets is the thing that always draws me in. There’s always such a thrill I feel when finding one in the wild with it’s original paint, with the perfect amount of chippiness.

Metal buckets offer great patina as well, and are really handy for housing live trees, since they can hold water. Don’t forget to add a little bit of ribbon or greenery to the handle for a bit of extra holiday flair.

Wood Crates

I don’t know about you, but right around the holidays is the time I realize that I don’t have enough horizontal display space for all the vintage holiday collections I have.

Using wood crates and wooden boxes is a great way to stack a temporary display for the holidays! This will give you extra space to display a collection in, and can easily be tucked into a corner to show off your holiday decor.

Stack them up high, but remember to secure them to each other and the wall if you have small children or pets in your home. This will make it safer for anyone who might be tempted to climb your stack.

I also have a wooden crate that is an old Coca Cola bottle holder. It makes for a great advent calendar! The kids love to open each jar, as I fill them with treats, money, and other goodies! The stickers fit the exact size of the small tops and count down the days.

Hey, Jill here. I’m excited to share my passion for design, vintage, and all things home. I look forward to hearing your questions and comments.

Metal Tins

Old metal tins are a great way to add patina and personal style to your holiday decor. They can be stacked up, hold treats, display trees, and much more.

When I travel to a foreign country, I often stop into antique shops and look for old tins with great patina that can be added to my collection. Not only do they really add some special personal style to my displays, but they hold memories from trips we have taken.

They are easy to purchase when traveling because they are always easy to get home. I can pack items inside them and put them in my carryon or checked luggage. They aren’t breakable, and often very reasonably priced.

Ruffle Slips

I just love pretty things, and who knew that something you wear could turn into Christmas decor in your home. I have a big dress-up closet that I have had forever, that ranges from really delicate and pretty vintage prom dresses to all the weird things the kids use for Halloween costumes.

One of the things I love to find is old ruffly slips to wear under dresses. And I love when they get to come out of hiding and become tree skirts at Christmas time!

The fuller the ruffles the better. And nothing looks prettier than a pretty and pastel tree with mini white lights and ruffles for the perfect shabby chic vibe!

Vintage Items Add Great Personal Style at Christmas Time

So when you are planning your Christmas decor this year, don’t just look to display your holiday items to add cheer. Look at all the vintage you have bought through the year.

Everyday items and vintage collections can add lots of personal style to your holiday decorating. It’s also a great way to switch up your displays year after year as your collections grow. Happy decorating!
