My favorite color palette

My home is a classic Cape Cod style, white on the outside with lighter blue shutters. Eight years ago we lived in a house down the street. Every day when I drove by this house, I used to say, “there’s my house!” or “that house needs me” and it surely did. We had the chance to buy it 3-1/2 years ago and jumped on it!

When designing a home, I let the house tell me what it wants. Lucky for me, this house wanted to remain true to its blue and white scheme. That was fine with me since it is my favorite color. The house boasts different shades of blue throughout, all living harmoniously around wood with patina and vintage treasures.

The first time I decorated this house for the holiday season, it was so fun. The house loves blue and white and that is the main theme throughout.

The family room, that is off the blue and white kitchen, gets decorated for the season in a more traditional Christmas color with green and red plaids and checks. But the main rooms, the entry and living room, are dressed in blue and white for the holidays!

Let’s begin in the entrance. Upon entering the house, you enter the foyer. There is a small section of railing for the stairway to the second floor. This is where my beloved collection of vintage sock stretchers starts.

Accented with evergreen garland, my collection has been growing. Last year, there were pairs that were staggered up the railing. This year, the collection has grown quite a bit! This is what last year looked like:

But you can never have too many of a good thing right?

White and blue decorations bring a festive feel

The carpet going up the stairs matches that white and blue color scheme. A bit of navy blue ribbon tied to the vintage newel post compliments the surroundings.

The small entry table near the front door features a mini white Christmas tree. It holds vintage blue and white ornaments with stripes. They are bell shaped and are some favorite ones that I have found.

The main tree that sits on a round table in the entry is a silver Christmas tree. The silver glistens against the lights and is such a beautiful backdrop to the vintage ornaments found there.

I have beautiful blue ornaments, silver ornaments, white birds, and white neutral ornaments that allow the blue & white scheme to shine.

There is a vintage slip that is used as a tree skirt and tied around the base. Its neutral color lace sits beautifully atop the wood table and elevates the look of the artificial tree.

More white and blue Christmas decor ideas

Entering the living room, the Christmas decorating leans into all the blue and white. There is a flocked tree immediately upon entering to your left. It is decorated as a winter wonderland with white tones of large ornaments. Filled with icicles, white snowflakes, silver and white flowers, all glistening from the string lights.

A pale blue crinoline slip is wrapped at the base of the tree as a tree skirt. Its voluminous ruffles are fun and I love the different ways these vintage accents add style to each tree. I found it at a flea market while shopping with my daughter. It brings to mind memories of that day.

The seating area has a coastal Christmas tree and nativity set on the coffee table, paired next to natural elements. My blue glass floats are there year round. They get accented with blue colors of sparkling ball ornaments, greenery and pinecones.

The fireplace mantel is the focal point, as the television hangs above it. It is decorated with natural greenery, a neutral garland and simple blue bows on top of light sage ones. All the seasonal decor is kept as a backdrop so the blue and white can shine.

Christmas decorating with favorite collections

Two collections that make it in the blue and white Christmas decorations room are vintage nativity sets and milk glass.

I have been trying to incorporate more nativity sets into all of my decor, so there are several in this room. The driftwood one really supports all the natural elements that go with the blue and white coastal feel decor.

My milk glass collection is vast, and I love to display vintage tree toppers in several of the milk glass vases from my collection. They sit so pretty in the vase, and give you a bit of a different perspective being able to see the tree toppers close up.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

The baby grand piano features another silver tree, but instead of more blue and white, I add a few different colors. Vintage pinks in a variety of shades, and it’s topped off with another vintage slip used as a tree skirt.

The dining room table has a large dough bowl down the center. It is filled with royal blue and silver balls.

When it is time for Christmas dinner, this can easily be moved to make room for each place setting. But for now, it adds tons of color and sparkle. There is a crispy white tree on each side of the dough bowl. They add to the count of trees throughout the house.

The backs of the dining chairs are tied with a bit of blue velvet ribbon and more holiday decor. With my collection of vintage sock stretchers growing, there were extras. I love the metal ones that I have found recently.

Adding a few around the room, brings a cohesive look and a common thread throughout the rooms.

The traditional Christmas decor

From this room, you get a peek into the traditional red and green in the family room. But the blue and white decorations speak to my heart.

I feel the holiday spirit alive in each of these different rooms and love each one at the Christmas season. The blue and white scheme brings a fresh look to the season. It still looks great next to the more traditional Christmas colors in the neighboring rooms.

The kitchen beyond is blue and white in decor. For this time of year, we add all the holiday colors. From the red, green, blue and all the tones and patina that come from vintage treasures. The crisp color of candy canes and vintage Santa mugs add fun to the space.

My favorite way to decorate

When I decorate, I try not to look at photos from the previous years. I have a great time while decorating. Getting everything out and placing it where it feels good for that time in my life.

I hope that maybe next year (or even this year) you might be inspired to add a new color of Christmas decorations to your space.

Whether you add silver or gold ornaments to make everything shine, an unconventional color scheme at the holidays is a great way to show your personal style. Add what you love and what holds dear holiday memories for you.

To me, that is the essence of the Christmas spirit.  I will hold Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year,
