In fashion, a style statement allows people to express their personality. Have you ever thought about doing the same for your home? Today I am going to share how to create a style statement for your home.
We’ve all seen her. You may have even been her at some point. She’s the girl that everyone notices because she has such great style. She walks with confidence, knows who she is and what she wants, and she gets noticed.
Well, you can have that same feeling for your home! You know, the place that everyone wants to be because it just feels good to be there. The best part? When we’re done here, you’ll be able to define your own home style statement.

What is a home style statement?
Think of a style statement for your home the same way youโd think about fashion. Just like you might describe your wardrobe as โclassic with a little edgeโ or โboho with a tailored twist,โ (currently I’m a bit of ‘comfy with a little paint splatter’) your home can have its own version of that.

A style statement is simply a few words that sum up the feeling you want your home to give. Itโs never about copying trends, but rather about capturing your vibe in a way that makes decorating easier and more personal. Honestly, it’s about being more…, well, YOU!
It’s the ultimate label of your home’s personal style.
Why it matters?
Hereโs the deal: without a style statement, decorating can feel a little all over the place. That impulse pillow you bought from Instagram because it was cute? Suddenly it doesnโt make sense in your room.

But when you know your style statement, youโve got a little built-in filter. It can help you:
- Buy things that will actually look great in your space (and skip the ones that donโt). No more continual regrets.
- Create flow from room to room, so your house feels collected and storied instead of disjointed.
- Save yourself time and money by sticking to what fits your look. You can look, but don’t touch, hahaha.
Bottom line? Your home is now a reflection of you. A style statement is just your cheat sheet to making it feel pulled together and authentically yours. It’s the talisman that brings it all together.

A few examples of home style statements
Relaxed Vintage Charm
This one’s a favorite. Looks like you just got back from the flea market with the perfect picks and flopped your feet up on your slipcovered sofa draped with a vintage quilt. It’s a little bit collected, and a whole lotta comfy. Think thrifted baskets, ironstone, and pieces that look like theyโve been loved for years.
Playful Eclectic
This is where color, pattern, and a fearless mix of styles run wild. Rules donโt matter as long as it makes you happy. Bold pop art, a bit of statement vintage, and lots to delight the eye. Might even include obsessive collections of quirky objects.
Tradition with a Twist
This space is classic, yet fresh. All the right traditional lines, but just before boring, it takes a turn. Classic furniture in bold new fabrics, tried and true color combos with some added punch, and all the family heirlooms used in a different and new way.
Coastal Casual
This one is light, airy, and breezy. Perfectly combined shades of whites, blues, sand, paired with natural textures. It’s storied but not cluttered. Classic patterns like cabana stripes paired with linen. Provides the kind of easy vibe that feels like a permanent vacation on the coast.
Refined Rustic
Think weathered wood and natural textures paired with a bit of polish. A chunky farmhouse table with a modern chandelier above it. Sleek yet earthy. Statement art but not too much of it. A chunky wool throw on a modern sofa, still deep set for snuggling.
How to Discover Your Home Style Statement
Start with What You Love
- Look at your favorite outfits, Pinterest boards, and saved IG posts. What do you keep going back to? What are you loving?
- Notice recurring patterns in these spaces (colors, textures, mood).
Translate Fashion to Interiors*
- Example: If you wear lots of tailored neutrals, your home may lean classic/minimal. If you are jeans and tee, then your home is probably focused on comfort.
- If you love bold prints, maybe your home is playful and eclectic.
*I haven’t always agreed with the idea that what is in your closet translates to your home decor. Sometimes we tend to live within color differently than how we wear it in the outside world. So use this as it applies.
Identify Descriptive Words
- Choose 2โ3 words that capture your look (for example โwarm, vintage, relaxedโ).
- Keep it simple and memorable and describe how you want to feel in the space.

Putting Your Style Statement into Action
Once you have come up with a few ideas for your style statement, we can now hone in on what is really you. Test it out in your mind first, then move forward with some practical application.
Use It as a Decorating Filter
- Ask: โDoes this fit my style statement?โ before buying or DIYโing.
Layer with Intention and Keep it Unapologetic
- Mix vintage finds, modern pieces, or family heirlooms while keeping the statement in mind. Don’t be afraid to edit the things that no longer suit you.
Keep it Ready to Change as You Do
- Your style can evolve as life always changes. Revisit your statement seasonally or every few years and tweak as needed.
Examples of Home Style Statements in Action
I’d like to share two examples of my own home, our current and the last home we lived in. These three pictures are from our current space, in the entry, and the heart of the home, the kitchen.

I would call this Collected Cottage Classic.
The blue and white (found throughout the home) makes a very clear style statement. The rooms are full of collections, where I display what I buy and love. Function and beauty live together in a classic way, and the spaces are made for gathering and living. We truly live in every room.
Our last home was definitely different, although it was still our same stuff. But the house spoke a different language. This one read Modern Farmhouse Refined.

There were many farmhouse details, but elevated and modern. All the finishes in this home were black. It worked amongst the rustic woods, yet classic details that we created there. The black details really weren’t my “thing” but the house called for it and I obliged (as we did a complete renovation of this home and touched everything!)
I chose items based not only on the home’s architecture and location, but also what spoke to me in that setting. We had all the same things in it that we love and live with now (minus a few pieces of furniture that I sold to the new homeowners) but it looked completely different.
The style statement pleased the house and our own aesthetic.

A home style statement is all about YOU
Your home is the backdrop to your life, your runway, if you will. It should reflect who you are, what you love, and what inspires you. Even when you are tempted to purchase something that you know, deep down, isn’t really you, evaluate why?
What about it made you want to jump on the trend? Was it really a genuine love of whatever it was? Or grab onto the feeling that it gave you, and tweak it into what would really work for you and that you would love long term.
If you saw someone post a trendy ‘pumpkin’ pillow of the season, and were tempted, before remembering that you never decorate that way seasonally, what drew you to it? Was it really the pumpkin? If not, maybe it was the texture or the color?

Evaluate your style statement and define what you are drawn to, and buy things that you truly love and are authentic to how you live. And you will always have a home that you love.
Armed with your personal focus, you can now create the rooms you really want to live in. Tell me in the comments what your style statement is, I’d love to know. Follow along for more inspiration.
