I have talked a lot about the home we currently live in. Today I wanted to share with you our bathroom, which was inspired by a place we love.

Before we bought this house, we lived down the street for a few years. I would drive by this Cape Cod style house and always say, “there’s my house”. Or “that house needs me, it is calling me”. Little did I know that years later, it would in fact, call out to me and it would be mine.

A color scheme true to the house

Our home wanted a full blue and white scheme. Seriously, the house was bossing me around and telling me what to do. So when we renovated the primary bathroom, I wanted to bring a very calming feeling to the space.

We were changing a lot about the room, but also keeping a few major things. Luckily we loved the sand colored marble on the vanity. I decided the room needed a beach theme. What better place to be inspired than my favorite place in the world, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

For over 15 years, when our kids were little, we vacationed every summer on the Cape. The kids loved the freedom of exploring the beach on the bayside, and I loved the peaceful, rejuvenating feeling that I got each year when we returned. What could be better inspiration?

Decorating for the memories

I chose each detail of our bath from these memories. On the floor, is tile the color of sand. I paneled the entire bathroom in a nickel gap shiplap. This mimics all the timeworn houses with paneling and moulding that have lasted over a century found all over the Cape.

The light fixtures over the sinks give a nautical nod, and the vintage artwork reminds me of places I have explored on the Cape.

My favorite piece is an original art piece hung above the tub that I purchased from a company in Wellfleet, a neighboring town to where we stayed every year on the Cape.

Display opportunities

I built cubbies to store necessities, displayed in milk glass, as I have collected much over the years from thrift stores spread throughout the Cape. There are little areas to tuck shells and rocks that I have picked up exploring Cape Cod and other beaches around the world.

We removed a large built-in cabinet, that left room for a pretty piece of furniture, painted in the color Tea Towel from my furniture paint line. It holds more shells, towels, and meaningful trinkets (the little gold French armoire jewelry display was my mother’s), and all the back stock you need from Costco for use in the bathroom.

The trash can is a colored pail I purchased at an antique shop one year on the Cape, and a metal clamming basket (purchased on the Cape) holds extra TP.

The pebble rock tile on the shower floor keeps my mind wandering to days strolling the beach for nature’s treasures. And of course, a faux blue hydrangea brings to mind the beautiful blooms found everywhere there.

Decorate to create a feeling

All the elements chosen for this room came from the feeling that I feel when I am in my happy place. And isn’t that what we all need after a long day out in the world? YES! We need a place to escape to, our haven of home, to make us feel safe and happy through life’s journey.

I hope this will inspire you to look at your own spaces and create rooms that help you feel alive and happy. And that, my friends, is exactly how I feel when I visit the Cape.

Wish you had shown a full picture of your armoire. This is mine. Found as a dark wooden piece with other items stacked against it. The glass front doors were beautiful, side glass was missing. So for a French touch I replaced the sides with chicken wire. That allows air circulation to keep stored towels fresh. Love your/our style. We live at the beach in Delaware.

    1. Hi Janice, I don’t think you can attach a picture to a blog comment, but I would love to see yours! You can email it to me at jill@bungalow47.com. You can also see just a touch of the bottom of my armoire in one of the pictures. It is a secretary, and has 3 drawers below, along with a desk area that folds out with cubbies inside. It stores a lot of costume jewelry and accessories! So glad you stopped by the blog today!
