I think we all could agree on the fact that color has power! I bet you’ve said, “oh, I love that color” or even “yuk, that is hideous”. We all have a reaction to color, especially in our homes.

Color can create a mood and reflect your personality, and is the easiest way to do so. I’d like to share with you a few ways that you can add a pop of color to your home decorating. From a splash of color to a more bold statement that creates a focal point, color is a great way to make your home stand out in the best way possible.

Dipping your decorating brush into the world of color

Let’s start out by assessing where your rooms currently are. Are you living in a beige and white world of neutral colors and ready to add some vibrance to your life?

Do you have bright colors that are “so yesterday” and just aren’t speaking to you anymore? Or do you just need a bit of a refresh and you know color is a great place to start?

Adding color to your space can be super easy, even if you are surrounded by white walls. The easiest ways to update your color story is to start small and simple.

Colorful spaces can be created within a neutral room. Actually, many of the rooms in my current home have white walls, yet the spaces are full of color. Adding color doesn’t have to be hard.

The easiest and most powerful change

We’ve all heard about the power of paint, and it is true, paint can be the one thing that makes a huge difference. It is also one of the creative ways you can really have your personal style shine.

When faced with a strict decorating budget, it could be the only source you have to make any changes. Paint is budget friendly, and transformative. But to remain budget friendly, you must really DIY the process.

The good news is, with more practice, the better you will get. Being able to complete your own painting projects will always be a great way for you to get a look that you desire.

Whether using bold color, or a neutral palette, this simple way of change will provide big impact in any of your rooms. Here are some of my favorite places to use paint.

WALLS! A ‘wall-flower’ no more

Obviously the ‘no-brainer’  thing to declare is “paint your walls”. Groundbreaking, I know. But it is a great place to start. They are the largest surface in your space.

However, fabulous colorful rooms can still have mostly neutral walls. But for big change, paint all the walls, or even just an accent wall.

You can even paint a pattern or mural on a wall. I have painted a gingham pattern on walls and it certainly adds a bit of fun along with those pops of color.

I know many want to be safe and only choose neutral tones for paint. Especially on tall walls where it is difficult to repaint, which is a smart choice.

But with an array of the rainbow at your fingertips, surely there is a hue that would be more thrilling and give you that pop of color you desire. After all, accent walls are the easiest to repaint.

Trim and woodwork don’t have to be basic

Color saturation is classic but is really having it’s moment right now. This happens when the trim, woodwork, and the entire wall is all painted in one shade. Sometimes even the ceiling!

But even painting the trim and woodwork a dominant color, and having the walls be more neutral can really make a great statement, especially if the moulding is thicker and special.

The trim color can then become the main accent colors throughout the rest of the space and can really weave a cohesive color palette throughout your home.

Doors just wanna have fun

Sometimes just painting the doors can do a lot to the overall look of a space. Especially in an area that is smaller, filled with a few doors, and might otherwise not offer any significant decor style.

This works great in a long and narrow hallway, small mudroom, or other interior space that lacks real character. Color can bring fun and surprise to the space.

Furniture is a low color commitment

Painting furniture is a great way to add bolder colors to a space that might be more neutral or bathed in soft colors. If your easing into the whole color situation, painted furniture can provide just the right amount to bring visual interest to a room.

Furniture can always easily be repainted for a different look and is much easier to do, since the surface of the piece is quite a bit smaller than an entire room. Our chalk and clay paint makes painting furniture very easy, even for the beginner.

Back when we had the home decor shop and sold many pieces of furniture weekly, the bold color ones were always the first to sell. We rarely painted anything white, as customers wanted that pop of color! I was always so happy to see that.

Tile and flooring need not lose out on the fun

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to give a room a totally new look, then paint is indeed it! And yes, you can even paint tiles and some flooring.

I had this problem when we moved into our current house, and I painted the slate tiles in the foyer. It made all the difference and was a cost efficient alternative to ripping it out and changing the whole thing.

I have also painted a bathroom before using epoxy paint and it made a world of difference, especially on our budget at the time. It’s not a quick option, but can be very budget friendly!

Safe never got a “WOW”, add color and pattern

Has anyone ever walked into a space and said, “Wow, this beige is really poppin’!”? Not likely. If you want to make a statement, consider pattern and color.

Even if you are feeling shy about the whole bold color thing, or even pops of color, adding patterns and textures can make a big difference.

Add color and pattern in wallpaper, vibrant rugs, curtains, upholstery, and other fabrics throughout the space. These items can easily be changed seasonally, which allows you to incorporate a variety of colors, especially if you live in a four season climate.

Different patterns, moving around a space, add visual interest and can live in harmony together for that “wow” moment you might be wanting.

Getting color confident

Yes, color is not for everyone. But it also is available to everyone, no matter your budget. So if you are wanting to make a particular room special, start small with color.

Build your confidence with it and see your reaction to how it makes you feel. Start small with accessories, and work your way up to incorporating different shades throughout your space.

Always consider the natural light in your space when choosing the shades to use and always how you want to feel in the room.

Your room has six walls, look up, down and all around

We’ve talked about painting walls, and even painting a floor like I did. But don’t forget to look up.

Your room actually has six sides; the four walls, the floor, and the ceiling. The ceiling should not be overlooked, although many times it is. In open floor plans, you may want to keep your color choices cohesive from space to space, but when rooms are enclosed, you can switch it up and have a little fun.

In our primary bedroom, we have a white batten and board paneling that goes throughout the space, with a patterned wallpaper above it. But I could tell, the room needed something a little “extra”.

After staring at the ceiling while laying in bed in the mornings, I got the idea to paint it a soft sky blue. What could be more relaxing than feeling like you are staring at the sky?

Blues and greens are, in fact, nature’s neutrals and the pale blue ceiling was a no brainer. The ceiling could also be a good place for that bold color you’ve been dreaming about.

How to get started and break free from beige

Start with small changes. I am a big believer that rooms are best decorated, styled, and restyled over time. Don’t ever feel pressured to decorate all at once.

I feel that when there is pressure, that is when mistakes are made or choices are rushed. This is how you end up with things that you don’t really love. Always wait for things you’ll love.

Experiment with different shades and color combinations. Once you begin incorporating color into your space, you will quickly see what hues are speaking to you.

Always focus on your own personal style, and choose colors that make you feel happy and that fit your home and surroundings.

Right now, the home we live in is very focused on blue and white. That is what the overall home wanted (yes, it did tell me hahaha).

I also don’t match colors exactly. In my current blue and white scheme, I have many different shades of blue throughout the house, and each lives harmoniously in the overall look.

This house also DOES NOT want any black accents, which were very prevalent in our last home and was the metal finish of choice. This house wanted a bit of sparkle, so I use chrome or polished nickel for the metal finishes.

Tips to remember when adding a pop of color to your rooms

Here are a few final things to consider when choosing colors for your space:

  • Decorating is really supposed to be fun. Don’t be afraid to show your personality.
  • Consider the color of your light bulbs too. They will directly affect how colors look in your home. I prefer daylight in public living spaces, and softer white is private spaces.
  • Metal choices do add to the overall look of the space. Consider that your “jewelry” color.
  • Light fixtures and lamp shades can get in on the color fun too, yet they are often overlooked.
  • Don’t follow trends. Choose colors that speaks to you and create the mood you want in your space.
  • What looks good in someone else’s house may not work in yours. Natural light, wood tones, and other surroundings play a big part in how colors appear in your space.
  • Don’t forget about temporary color. Plants, flowers, quilts, children’s artwork displayed can all add color to a space, without becoming permanent fixtures. Embrace seasonal color too.
