When the weather starts to change, that’s the time I want to switch it up indoors too. Let’s talk about easy swaps to update your space seasonally.
I was born and raised in Southern California, and have spent half of my life living there. So to say that I appreciate the change in seasons is an understatement. In fact, I love it!

Living in SoCal, the temp is pretty consistent. It might go from overcast, to a classic sunny day, to outright hot. When I first moved to Michigan, I was thrilled to experience the four seasons.
As we have moved back and forth from there to here a few times, I appreciate the change even more. Now I know, we choose Michigan for many reasons. For me, the weather is one of them.

So updating your home indoors, when the weather changes, is important for how you live. Even if I might be spending more time outdoors in the summer, or snuggling up when the temps drop.
If you enjoy any seasonal change, here are a few ideas to make the inside of your home feel fresh and accommodate how you live in it seasonally.
Swap out rugs
When the seasons change, it’s time to switch out the area rug. If you layer, simplify and remove a rug. If you have a heavier rug, consider swapping it out for a lighter option, or roll it up and store it for the season.

During winter, I layer a jute rug with a Alpaca fur one, that makes the whole space feel warm and cozy near the fireplace. When it’s warmer, I usually keep the jute rug, or add a lighter one that has a fresh pattern (like stripes) for the warmer months.
Consider an indoor/outdoor option, as they are very easy to clean.
Change pillow sham covers
Throw pillows can add a lot to your decor. Not only are they visually appealing, and can accessorize a look, but they make curling up on the couch more comfy.
Trade out overly textured throw pillows for lighter weight options. Or take away a few heavier feeling ones, and add a seasonal option.

Investing in down pillow inserts is always a good idea. When seasons change, you simply can just switch the outside of the pillow to accentuate the look and feel you want. Plus they are much easier to clean!

Rearrange your vignettes
If you want to freshen your space, consider moving some home decor accessories around.
I like to grab and gather smaller items, and spread everything out on the dining room table. Then I go back, with fresh eyes, and ‘shop’ my options to switch items around.

Simply moving displays, adding seasonal greenery, and shifting decor can freshen up your view of a space.
Bring out a new or old collection
Once you have had the chance to remove home decor, and place it all into one area, add something new.

This might be the time to bring that collection that you have behind closed doors, more out into the open. It will freshen your space, and give you a chance to appreciate why you began collecting it in the beginning anyway.

Swap out some art
This is where size matters, as you don’t want to have to rehang your nails for art. To swap out art, consider leaning art on the mantle or against the wall on the furniture top.
If you have vintage art in similar sizes, and can rehang a piece without moving the nails, switch up the themes to create a mood you want.

Mixed media art can be placed within vignettes and give your space a new attitude.
Add seasonal touches
If you love to accent the seasonal changes, pull out all your best bunnies, flags, trees, pumpkins, or whatever seasonal items that you like to display.

Fill vessels seasonally, with natural elements, and tuck other decor into your new displays. This is also a good time to add new pops of color to create a different mood.
Rotate indoor plants and flowers
As the natural light shifts in your house, seasonal changes are an excellent time to move live plants or flowers around. Consider what spots are best for the plants and create new displays with them.

Think vertically as well as horizontally, and group plants together for more visual appeal.
If you don’t have an interior green thumb like me, embrace your faux or dried options.

Change lap blankets to suit the season
Just because it’s warmer outside will not mean that lap blankets get a month off. With a mix of people and body temps living in one house, the temperature won’t ever please everyone. Especially if there is a menopausal mom in the mix!

Keep lap blankets around, but have a variety of thicknesses to choose from. When one person is sweating, there is bound to be another who is freezing from the A/C.
Color and texture changes are needed when the weather shifts. They will help to create the mood you want to create for the season.
Tweak furniture placement
In the winter, we have a wood burning fireplace that I love to have a crackling fire in. During warm months, it obviously doesn’t get used. For this reason, I reposition the couch so it is not directly focused on the fireplace.
If you aren’t using your fireplace, can the furniture be shifted in your space to accommodate the things you are doing more in the season?

Are you hosting more game nights? Is there more people at home, lounging around. Tweak your furniture placement to work with how you are living RIGHT NOW. It can always be changed back later.
Make those updates now
Now is the time to switch things up, and create that seasonal mood you desire. We all get busy, so just go and make it happen! Otherwise, you’ll end up like me in some years, where the weather changed again before I had the chance to restyle.

It doesn’t have to take long. Make some simple and small changes that please you.
Your home should always be a reflection of how you are currently living and what your needs are now.
