Painting Glass Mason jars is a great way to get a custom look for whatever glass jar project your heart desires. They make great inexpensive centerpieces, too.
Recently, we hosted a fiftieth wedding anniversary party, and the family was planning a little surprise shindig for this golden festivity. It was time to get crafting!
Here are the supplies you need:
clean Mason jars*
Bungalow 47™ Furniture Paint (we used Clawfoot Tub)
gold glitter
white glue
painter’s tape
sanding block
brush
buffing cloth
*New glass jars are not necessary for your project; just make sure they are clean and free from any oily residue, especially old adhesives from labels.
Paint the exterior of the jar as desired. Since these would become centerpieces with cut flowers, the jars would be filled with water.
If you are using them for decor where nothing will be placed inside of them, however, you can also paint the interior of the jar.
This works best by pouring a generous amount of paint inside the jar, and rotating it around to achieve full coverage, then pouring out the excess paint. That technique also works best for glass ornaments.
Back to jars! After allowing the first coat to dry, paint a second coat. Bungalow 47™ Furniture Paint provides great coverage, but glass is a little tricky, so two coats are best.
Allow extra drying time if your climate is humid. After the paint is dry, sand the high areas of the glass jar with your sanding block to highlight the jar details, if desired.
You can see from this previous project we did that distressing brings out interesting detail.
When sanding is complete, simply buff with a clean, dry cloth.
Since we were adding the glitter feature to accent the golden years theme, we taped off the area where we wanted it placed. Painter’s tape works best.
We used Elmer’s glue, but any tacky white glue will work.
Glue was applied with an inexpensive chip brush. It’s best not to use your nice painting brush with white glue, as you wouldn’t want any residue staying on your bristles even after cleaning.
Now the fun part—glitter! Sprinkle glitter over a surface where you can collect the falling glitter to reuse as well.
We also glittered the top rims. These weren’t taped since there was a ridge of separation that was easy to follow when the glue was applied.
Ta-da! Instant glittery, golden centerpieces!
Take care when adding water to the inside of the jar, to protect your paint and glitter.
