A Kitchen Makeover – Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Hi friends! Lizzy here. I’m Jill’s daughter, a photographer, and an amateur DIY-er. I’m here to share my latest kitchen cabinet makeover with you! You may have seen my first try at cabinet painting on a previous post. We recently moved (I do not recommend moving during a pandemic) and I found myself YET AGAIN staring at a kitchen that had so much potential but was currently…. blah.

BEFORE

AFTER

This was my second time painting cabinets and it went a lot smoother after I learned not to paint cabinets on the ground in my living room – there was no dog hair or paw prints on them this time! Instead, I sanded down the cabinets in my garage (use a power sander! I got mine on amazon), primed them, and then painted 2 coats of the color Farmhouse Sink. I thought it could be faster this time to spray instead of brush, so I tried a few, but Bungalow 47 Paint is so creamy and thick I actually feel like I got WAY better coverage by just brushing them. I finished off the cabinets with Matte Finish which is my absolute favorite type of top coat. I just wiped it on with a terrycloth staining sponge super quick and you get wonderful protection without all the shine. Ahhh I’m so in love with them.

Honestly, painting your own cabinets can be time consuming but is ultimately so worth it! Don’t feel intimidated or pressured to do it all at once. You can do a couple cabinets at a time so you’re not without cabinet doors for too long. It took me about 2 days to do all mine (and I had a lot!) but I had the help of my lovely husband and a babysitter.

In the end, we saved so much money doing it ourselves and I was able to get EXACTLY what I wanted style-wise because I was in control! So pick up the paint brush and choose TODAY to be the day that you go for it! You can do it. I am NOT a professional, but I had success because I chose a high quality paint in Bungalow 47 Furniture Paint, and I went through the proper prep steps even though they took time (hello sanding!). Take the leap and share your results with us on Instagram or Facebook by using the hashtag #bungalow47 or #bungalow47paint. We can’t wait to see what you do!
